FAQs

Got questions? You’re not the only one. Here are answers to the most common things people want to know before starting care.

How soon can I get started with physical therapy?

Generally Dr. Kim will try to get you scheduled within 2-4 weeks, there are times where you may need to be placed on a waitlist and it may take 6-8  weeks to begin physical therapy.  During that time Dr. Kim has some downloadable guidebooks that you can utilize to begin your journey.

Is this just for postpartum women?

No! While postpartum recovery is a major focus, I treat women in every life stage—from teens with painful periods to perimenopausal women navigating bladder leaks and vaginal dryness. Pelvic floor health matters before, during, and long after childbirth.

What should I expect during my first appointment?

We’ll start with a thorough conversation about your symptoms, goals, and medical history. I’ll assess how your body moves, breathes, and functions as a whole—not just your pelvic floor. If appropriate and with your consent, we may do an internal pelvic floor muscle assessment. You’ll leave with a personalized plan, not a cookie-cutter routine.

I’m not currently pregnant or postpartum. Can you still help me?

Absolutely. Many of my clients are years past childbirth—or have never given birth. I also treat women in perimenopause, menopause, and beyond. Bladder leaks, prolapse symptoms, painful sex, or pelvic pain are not “just part of getting older.”

What if I’ve already tried PT and it didn’t help?

Not all PT is created equal. Many clients come to me after feeling dismissed or not getting lasting results. I take a whole-person approach, looking beyond just the pelvic floor to address posture, breathing, movement, stress, and more. Often, it's not what you were doing—it’s how it was delivered.

What exactly is pelvic floor physical therapy?

Pelvic floor PT is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on the muscles, nerves, and connective tissues that support your bladder, bowel, uterus, and sexual function. It helps address issues like leaking, prolapse, pain with sex, constipation, and core weakness. You’ll get one-on-one, personalized care—not a generic set of Kegels.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

In most cases, no. Many states, including Virginia allow direct access to physical therapy, which means you can schedule an evaluation without a referral. If needed, I can coordinate with your physician or OB/GYN

Is an internal exam required?

Not at all. Your comfort and consent come first. Internal exams can be helpful, but we can make meaningful progress using external techniques, movement assessments, breathing strategies, and education.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your symptoms and goals, but most clients start to notice meaningful changes within 3–6 visits. My goal is always to help you make sustainable progress—not keep you in therapy forever.

I’m embarrassed to talk about this. Will you understand?

100%. Nothing is off-limits here. I’ve helped thousands of women navigate the very symptoms you’re facing—and I’ve been there myself. This is a safe, respectful, and compassionate space where you can finally talk about what no one else is talking about.
